Twitter gets more visual with photo, video previews

October 29, 2013

By Zach Miners | IDG News Service

Twitter became an Internet phenom as a tool for posting short text messages, but now it also wants to feature multimedia content more prominently.

[ Get your websites up to speed with HTML5 today using the techniques in InfoWorld's HTML5 Deep Dive PDF how-to report. | For a quick, smart take on the news you'll be talking about, check out InfoWorld TechBrief -- subscribe today. ]

Previews of photos and videos will now appear on users' timeline streams, whereas before people had to click on links to see them. The new feature is available on Twitter's iOS and Android apps, as well as on its Web version.

The changes apply only to photos uploaded using Twitter, and to videos created with Twitter's Vine app. People still have to navigate to an outside page to see photos or videos from third-party services.

Users can expand the photos or watch the videos by tapping them on mobile and clicking on them on the desktop.

With this feature, Twitter wants to provide a more media-rich experience for users and to better compete against big rivals like Instagram and Snapchat. "These rich tweets can bring your followers closer to what's happening," the company said in its announcement.

But the changes also come as Twitter faces pressure to build out its advertising business, as its public debut on the New York Stock Exchange looms.

Video ads constitute a major element of Twitter's advertising business, which generated 85 percent of the company's revenue last year, the company said on its IPO documents. Placing more video and photo content front and center in users' feeds, therefore, could give marketers an added incentive to advertise with Twitter.

Twitter has already partnered with more than a dozen broadcasters and media networks through its Amplify program, which places promotional video content in users' feeds. Some of those partners include Bloomberg TV, A&E, and BBC America.

Rogers vs. Bell vs. TELUS: Which Canadian iPad Air or Retina iPad mini carrier should you get?

Rogers vs. Bell vs. TELUS: Which Canadian iPad carrier should you get?

2013 iPad buyers guide: How to choose between Rogers, Bell, TELUS, and their discount subsidiaries, Fido and Virgin Mobile.

Once you've decided you're getting a new iPad Air and picked your capacity and color, now you have the option of picking a carrier if you want wireless data. The vast majority of users just stick to Wi-Fi networks for their fix, but you can also get data over cell towers. If you're in Canada, that means going with one of the big three carriers: Rogers, Bell, or TELUS, or one of their lower-price subsidiaries. All of the big three have confirmed that they'll be offering the latest and greatest iPads and Apple announced the iPad Air with cellular connectivity would start at $649. So which carrier should you go with? We've chewed through the plans and coverage, and here's what we've found!

The big three: Rogers, Bell, and TELUS

Across the board, the 16 GB iPad Air with cellular costs $649, the 32 GB model is $749, the 64 GB iPad Air is $849, and the gigantic 128 GB iPad Air with cellular is $949.

Plans differ a bit depending on if you're getting a stand-alone plan or if you're attaching it to an existing account. Unlike smartphone plans, iPad data plans don't have to be on contract, though you can sign up for two-year plans to save a little bit. Exact pricing details on that front aren't yet solidified.

Bell and TELUS share the same towers for their GSM/LTE network but have different back-hauls (different connections to the internet from the towers). That means the Bell/TELUS tower near your home, school, or work could still provide better speeds on one or the other networks. For a comprehensive look at speed and network quality, be sure to check out PC Mag's in-depth study.

The budget carriers: Fido and Virgin Mobile

Each of the big three carriers owns a subsidiary that typically offers lower-cost options by way of a tab system. Rogers owns Fido. Bell owns Virgin Mobile. TELUS owns Koodo. When it comes to the iPad Air, these don't offer much beyond what you'll get on the primary carriers, since they're all on the same network, and you aren't getting a contract with device subsidy anyway. Koodo doesn't even have a tablet plan - they suggest you just use your existing smartphone line as a portable hotspot if you want your iPad to have connectivity - but Fido and Virgin will be supporting the iPad Air.

Who should get their iPad on Rogers?

Rogers is the big boy on the block. Since the spring, Rogers has spread to Manitoba, offering LTE coverage to Winnipeg and other nearby areas. Of course all of the major centers are covered with LTE, including Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Regina, Edmonton, and lots of others.

This is going to get repetitive, but if you're in those areas and speed matters more to you then money, go with Rogers. All of their tablet plans are "Flex Rate," which means simply that they'll bump you up to the next tier after you've gone through the cap of your original one. For some reason, you get half as much data on their $20 plan compared to the other guys, but that may get amended prior to launch. If you already have a Rogers line, you can share you data bucket with your iPad for an extra $10/month on select Share Everything plans. You can also use mobile hotspot on your phone so long as your plan is over 1 GB.

Rogers iPad Air plans

  • $5 - 10 MB of data
  • $10 - 100 MB of data
  • $20 - 500 MB of data
  • $40 - 5 GB of data ($10/1 GB overage)

Who should get their iPad on Bell?

For coverage, you'll see that there are a few areas where Bell reaches that others don't, namely up north. Bell regularly boasts to having Canada's largest LTE network, but take that claim with a grain of salt. When it comes to speed, Bell has the same kind of 150 Mbps LTE as Rogers in the Greater Toronto Area, Cambridge, and Kitchener-Waterloo.

Bell has Flex Plans like Rogers, and provides a lot more data at the $20 tier. Bell also has the best overage rates beyond the 5 GB limit at a cent and a half per MB. As an alternative to the Flex rates, Bell also has fixed 30-day passes, but the only real appeal there is for their 5 GB package, which is $5 less than the Flex plan. Apparently this is still active, and may be worth your while. If you're a lighter user, you can also use mobile hotspot on any smartphone plan. If you already have a Bell line, you can share your data bucket to your new iPad for $10/month. If you end up getting a new data plan with Bell for your iPad Air, you'll get access to some popular public Wi-Fi hotspots, including McDonald's Tim Hortons, and Chapters. They'll also toss in 10 hours of tablet TV per month for the first two months, which doesn't count towards your data cap. After that two months, Tablet TV costs $5/month. All in all, Bell is looking like a very attractive offer, assuming they provide coverage in your area.

Bell iPad Air plans

  • $5 - 10 MB of data
  • $20 - 1 GB of data
  • $40 - 5 GB of data ($0.015 / MB overage)

Who should get their iPad Air on TELUS?

I've always been a big fan of TELUS, mainly because among The Big Three, I find it's easiest getting plan information from them. Also, the cute branding and nice-looking stores help too. You can see from the coverage map that the Ontario corridor is well covered, as well as the Maritimes. Alberta's also looking pretty good, and it looks like there's even some decent service in the Northwest Territories. I've generally been happy with the speeds I get on TELUS, though I haven't spent too much time on their LTE.

Like Rogers, the TELUS iPad plans are all Flex plans, so they automatically get bumped up when you exceed your cap. Beyond the top tier, it's $0.05 / MB. The $20 plan on TELUS is much better than Rogers, and the overage rate beyond 5 GB is also half (though not as good as Bell). If you want to get your iPad on your existing TELUS smartphone plan, it would costs an extra $10/month, or you can use mobile hotspot on any plan.

TELUS iPad Air plans

  • $5 - 10 MB of data
  • $10 - 100 MB of data
  • $20 - 1 GB of data
  • $50 - 5 GB of data ($5 / 1 GB overage)

Who should go with a discount carrier?

Even the discount carriers like Fido and Virgin Mobile offer data plans for tablets, though Koodo doesn't. T-Mobile also getting the iPad Air, so you can expect a version that works on WIND or Mobilicity. Though the rates at WIND and Mobilicity are great for mobile internet, you'll be taking a hit in coverage - make sure they can keep you covered in the important places.

Still undecided?

If you're still not sure about which Canadian carrier to get for your iPad Air jump into our iPad discussion forums and the best community in mobile will happily help you out, or hey, maybe Wi-Fi-only is good enough for you. Let know in the comments - which one did you go with and why?

(AP) — Jubilant Red Sox fans have taken to the streets around Fenway Park to cheer their team's World Series victory, the first time Boston has won baseball's fall classic at home in 95 years.

Fans chanted and caroused outside the historic ballpark Wednesday after Boston vanquished the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 in Game 6. Police reported no significant problems immediately following the game but said they were ready for post-game celebrations.

The Red Sox have now won three World Series in a decade, but they hadn't won at home since 1918.

The triumphant fans spilling out of Fenway joined hundreds already gathered around the ballpark.

Russ Stappen paid several hundred dollars for a ticket but says it was a small price to be a part of Red Sox history.

Brazil's OGX files for bankruptcy protection

(AP) — The oil company of Brazil's one-time richest man filed for bankruptcy protection Wednesday, marking a humbling blow for Eike Batista, a flamboyant former champion speedboat racer who has been his nation's biggest economic cheerleader in recent years.

Brazilians and analysts alike struggled to understand the rise and fall of Batista, who largely bankrolled Rio's winning bid to host the 2016 Olympics, and whether it could be linked to Brazil's own economic sluggishness of the past three years.

Some said the story of Batista's failure to deliver on producing offshore oil and resulting inability to obtain more investor credit was a byproduct of bad luck and a toughening overall economic environment.

Others feared it's just the latest sign that Brazil won't soon see an end to its economic slide.

"What's the phrase? When the tide goes out, you can see the man who is not wearing a bathing suit?" said Jefferson Finch, a Latin America analyst with the New York-based consulting firm Eurasia Group. "That's what's happened with Eike Batista."

Finch said that "investor enthusiasm started turning on Brazil around 2011" after five years of high hopes South America's biggest nation had finally turned a corner and would make good on its longtime promise to become a perennial power with repeated years of strong growth.

"But if you look at the overall context, Brazil was never as promising as people said it was in 2006, when a lot of commentators were effervescent on Brazil, ignoring the structural challenges it faced," he said. "Now, Brazil is not as bad as all the negative commentary."

Among the indicators that Brazil is heading in the right direction, Finch pointed to the government's slow but steady efforts to boost infrastructure investment, push tax reform and send tens of thousands of college science students abroad to get better training to eventually fill a gap in skilled labor.

But with economic growth of just 0.9 percent last year, a long fall from the 7.5 percent growth seen in 2010 amid a global financial crisis, others expressed doubts.

"The entire thing has had a really negative impact on Brazil's image and reinforces the need for stronger corporate governance in this country," said Cassia Pontes, an oil industry analyst with the Rio-based Lopes Filho consulting firm. "Reality didn't live up to the exaggerated expectations created by Batista."

OGX, created in 2007, didn't deliver on its promises to produce significant amounts of offshore oil even though it reported many finds since 2010, when its market-value reached $34 billion. In the first half of this year, the company averaged output of just 8,500 barrels a day and racked up more than $2.5 billion in losses.

Critics contend Batista lied to investors, citing a correction made earlier this month for a promising OGX offshore field. In 2012, OGX said the field held nearly 1 billion barrels, but a few weeks ago it lowered that projection to 285 million barrels, too late for those who plowed cash into buying the company's stock.

Miriam Leitao, one of Brazil's top economic columnists, wrote on her blog for the O Globo newspaper Wednesday that Batista's "main error was to declare that he had what he didn't, to mislead the investor."

"Today, it's easy to see the entrepreneur's errors," Leitao wrote. "But earlier it was, too. He's always exaggerated the potential of his companies and thus increased his stock. ... He built a house of cards."

In filing for bankruptcy protection before a Rio de Janeiro state court, Batista's OGX Petroleo e Gas Participacoes SA, part of his EBX Group conglomerate, now has 60 days to come up with a restructuring plan. Investors holding $3.6 billion in debt will then have 180 days to accept or reject the plan. If it's not accepted, the company will be liquidated.

OGX is the backbone of a Batista empire that also includes steel, mining, infrastructure and real estate companies. All are struggling as Batista has come up short on his bet that he could deliver riches with offshore oil finds.

Batista was in talks for months with OGX's creditors, but earlier this month the company missed a $45 million interest payment on the bonds and hopes of working out a deal evaporated.

OGX reported on its website that it needs $250 million "to satisfy near-term liquidity through the first quarter of 2014." The company said that if the restructuring plan isn't accepted, and with no new funding, it will run out of cash before year's end.

For Henrique Matias Lorenzo, a 27-year-old graphic designer in Sao Paulo who sipped a coffee while reading about Batista on his iPad, the fall of Brazil's best-known business playboy should serve as a slap of reality for his country.

"What happened was that Eike had excessive optimism, and that spread to others who came to believe in a project that wasn't based on solid figures and facts," Lorenzo said. "I think it reflects the overall slowdown on Brazil, because the economy is also based on an optimism that isn't strongly supported by reality."

Nikki Bella addresses her return from injury

Nikki Bella is back in action, and this is a fairly big deal. Only a few months ago, the former Divas Champion’s future seemed up in the air after she suffered a leg injury during a match on Raw. Now Twin Magic is flowing again and Nikki has returned to the ring alongside her sister, Brie, to battle Divas Champion AJ Lee. As the new and improved Bella Twins pick up momentum, WWE.com caught up with the senior sister to see how her recovery was going, and how much of it we’ll get to witness on the upcoming new episodes of “Total Divas” when the reality show hit returns to E! Nov. 10 at 10/9 CT.

WWE.COM: Can you tell the WWE Universe how your leg feels?

NIKKI BELLA: My leg is feeling good. It’s not quite 100 percent yet; I still can’t jump on it and feel  too much impact from running the ropes. But other than that it’s definitely getting stronger every day. I definitely am more on the healing side than not the healing side, so as long as I’m ready to fight, I’m good to go to fight. I’m still limited in what I can do, but I’m feeling great.

WWE.COM: What was going through your mind knowing in your first match back you were teaming with your sister?

NIKKI: You know, I was nervous, but I have to say knowing Brie was going to be by my side I felt a lot better. Brie has just been killing it in the ring; it made me feel really comfortable knowing that she’s been going two hours before every show and training really hard with her fiancĂ©, Daniel Bryan. This past week, when I was given a green light to do just a tiny bit of stuff, I was going in early with them just to move around the ring and get the feel for it. She definitely helped calm my nerves because I knew if I got in trouble she was going to be right there to save the day.

WWE.COM: Can you talk about what helped get you the injury and your time on the sidelines?

NIKKI: It was very tough. Even when I played competitive soccer for 11 years I never liked being on the sidelines. When I  broke my leg my senior year in high school it was just the worst feeling to sit and watch when you can’t be a part of something.

One of the things that helped me get through this was John Cena. He is like a life coach to me. He just consistently gave me good advice, like, what I could do to make myself better while I’m out. He was getting me in the gym working on upper body strength every day. His advice was so motivating. I realized, “Hey, this isn’t the end of the world. How else can I make Nikki Bella better, and how can I still be a part of the show?” So that really kept my spirits up.

I have to say, Brie and I have always been looked at as the twins in WWE, and my injury kind of gave Brie this passion and fire to say, “Hey, I’m on my own, and I have to prove to everyone I’m still someone without Nikki.” I think watching Brie transform into who she is now – I don’t want to say it’s made my injury worthwhile – but it’s made me feel better about it. We’ve proven that we can be individuals, but it shows that the twins don’t always have to wrestle together or talk together or dress alike or be together. That has made me get through it; a lot of people see us more as individuals and it’s because of my sister and this fire that I’ve never seen from her before. It’s really, really fun to watch.

University of Notre Dame researchers have, for the first time, identified the enzymes that are detrimental to diabetic wound healing and those that are beneficial to repair the wound.

There are currently no therapeutics for diabetic wound healing. The current standard of care is palliative to keep the wound clean and free of infection. In the United States, 66,000 diabetic individuals each year undergo lower-limb amputations due to wounds that failed to heal.

A team of researchers from Notre Dame's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, led by Mark Suckow, Shahriar Mobashery and Mayland Chang, searched for metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the wounds of healthy and diabetic mice.

Gelatinases, a class of enzymes, have been implicated in a host of human diseases from cancer to cardiovascular conditions. Chang has been researching activation of MMPs, particularly gelatinase B or MMP-9.

The MMPs remodel the extracellular matrix in tissue during wound healing.

"We show that MMP-9 is detrimental to wound healing, while MMP-8 is beneficial," Chang said. "Our studies provide a strategy for diabetic wound healing by using selective MMP-9 inhibitors."

The team treated diabetic mice with an inhibitor of MMP-9 and discovered that wounds were healed 92 percent after 14 days, as compared to 74 percent healing in untreated mice.

The identification of the enzyme that interferes with diabetic wound healing and that which repairs the wound opens the door to new, novel treatment strategies.

"Currently, advanced wound dressings containing collagen are used for diabetic wound healing," Chang said. "The collagen provides a substrate so that the unregulated MMP-9 chews on the collagen in the dressing, rather than on the wound. It would be better to treat the diabetic wounds with a selective MMP-9 inhibitor to inhibit the culprit enzyme that is impeding wound healing while leaving the beneficial MMP-8 uninhibited to help repair the wound."

The study appeared in the American Chemical Society's journal ACS Chemical Biology.
